“Egoless” by Scott Holleran

The author reads his story of a boy who becomes an Islamic terrorist

This story podcast episode features me reading “Egoless,” the tale of an unnamed boy who chooses to become an Islamic terrorist in first person. The story was published on a literary journal website in New Orleans, Louisiana weeks before the New Year’s Day Islamic terrorist attack on Bourbon Street. You can read “Egoless” here.

The third and final short story of my winter trilogy for Classic Chicago magazine—“Allegheny Lane,” which I read aloud here and described in this article—will be published this spring. This, too, is about a solitary boy.

Another new short story, “The Bus Stop,” which also concerns a boy, is scheduled for publication (stand by for an announcement in the near future). Besides my novel, I’m writing new fiction in short story form. I’m considering publishing a book of my short stories. To read advance previews of my fiction and be informed of investment and creative opportunities, become a Speakeasy subscriber to this podcast.

Like politics, and, in a different way, like religion, holidays are uniquely personal to one’s past, one’s childhood—the psychology you develop and create in whatever mysterious way it manifests in you—one’s philosophy. I think this is particularly true of Valentine’s Day. What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?

Practicing the Art of Non-Fiction

Practicing the Art of Non-Fiction

The art of storytelling applies to both fiction and non-fiction. On this small press, which I created last year to showcase my fiction writing, you can read or preview my short stories. If you’re a paid subscriber, you can listen to me read the stories aloud. This article concerns the art of non-fiction. I’ll examine and emphasize differences between writing fiction and non-fiction. Then, I’ll provide examples. Finally, pardon the promotionalism, I’ll plug my non-fiction.
