Today marks a literary milestone. My short story, “Beautiful are the Brave,” is published as the top fiction in The Bookends Review in America’s first capital, Philadelphia. You can read the story here.
This episode, which comes on the eve of my story podcast’s first anniversary, is my first video episode. I appreciate your commentary, criticism and feedback—also, feel free to ask me anything—in advance. This story was repeatedly rejected until Bookends editor Jordan Blum accepted it. Former newspaper editor Cynthia Takano had suggested a simple edit, which I made because it improves the story. Briton Media’s Noah Swiderski edited the video. My former student, business partner and muse Kim Wilson witnessed every step. I also appreciate Adele, whose song, “Someone Like You,” is the impetus for “Beautiful are the Brave,” which depicts a soldier in love who chooses to change sex and discovers the truth.
