Scott, It's best to offer a ~free sample~ in the case of fiction:

Browsing this substack, it seems that to read any of your short stories, one has to subscribe. But there's lots of people who write fiction and those who don't know you would need to Read an example to find out if you're any good or if they like your type of writing:

Doing fiction is a different skill from non-fiction commentary on the current culture.

Phil, in fact, I do.

Most articles on the story podcast/publication are available to read, several without ads or a paywall. The paid subscriber gains access to the author, yours truly, reading each story aloud. I’ve added links to published stories as well. Kindly browse and read what interests you, from “Beautiful are the Brave” in The Bookends Review to “Allegheny Lane” in Classic Chicago magazine. These and more are linked on my posted articles.

Meanwhile, thank you for your interest in my fiction writing.

Thanks, Scott. I just saw your substack for the first time and everywhere it looked like you had to subscribe to read a story. I'll go check out the two publications you just mentioned to read one though. I'm assuming they are online so I will go check that out shortly...

I just went over to Classic Chicago To find your story. Not sure how to find something specific there. There is no search bar 🥺.

Yes, there is—I’ll post a screenshot FYI—and, meanwhile, here’s the link to an index of short stories (most are authored by yours truly): https://classicchicagomagazine.com/category/short-stories/
